About the words with no vowels
Vowel-free words are useful when a word game leaves you with an awkward rack, and they come up regularly in puzzle trivia. Most of them lean on Y or on abbreviations that have entered ordinary use.
For this tool a vowel means one of the five vowel letters a, e, i, o and u. Y is a consonant unless you switch the option on, because it behaves as a vowel sound in words like “cry”.
Frequently asked questions
Is Y a vowel?
It depends on the word. Y makes a vowel sound in “cry” and a consonant sound in “yes”. This tool treats it as a consonant by default and gives you a switch to change that.
Why are there so few words?
Almost every English word needs a vowel sound. The exceptions rely on Y or on short interjections.
