What you can type into Words With Letters

Any order (default)
Each letter you type must appear somewhere in the word. Position does not matter.
In this order
The letters must appear left to right, but other letters may sit between them. GHT in order matches light and also brighten; it does not require the letters to be adjacent.
Length limits
Minimum and maximum length narrow the list; leave them blank for all lengths.

How the results behave

Grouped by length
Matches are grouped by letter count so you can scan the group that fits your slot.
Duplicate letters
Typing a letter twice does not require two copies of it — use the pattern tools if you need a specific arrangement.
Capped list
A search returns up to 400 matches so the page stays fast. When you see a full 400 results, add a length or letter filter to see the part of the list you actually need.

Tips

  • Three well-chosen letters usually narrow the list more usefully than five guessed ones.
  • Turn the in-order option on when you are working with a real cluster; leave it off when you are testing loose tiles.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting the in-order option to keep letters adjacent — it does not, it only preserves their sequence.
  • Adding rare letters together (x, y, z) and reading an empty result as a bug rather than as no match.

About the words with letters

Puzzle solvers with a few known letters but no idea where they sit, and teachers drilling letter clusters such as ough, tion or eigh.

Searching by contained letters is the fastest way to work through a partially filled puzzle answer, and it is also handy for spelling practice around tricky letter clusters such as ough, tion or eigh.

Requiring the letters in order behaves like a subsequence search: the letters must appear left to right, but other letters may sit between them.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results come from this site's own list of about 16,750 words drawn from common written English. It is not an official game or tournament dictionary: rare, technical and inflected words can be missing, while some names, place names and abbreviations are included even though most word games would reject them. Always check a result against the rules of the game you are playing.

Can I search for a whole letter cluster?

Yes — enter the cluster and enable the in-order option to keep the letters adjacent in sequence.
